Introduction to the 1940s
The 1940s were an incredible period in Britain's history. Throughout a savage world war with its horrors and deprivation, despite the shortage of food and clothing, in spite of air raids, bombing and the constant risk of death or loss, ordinary British people obeyed government instructions to 'Keep calm and carry on'.
