Headlong Through Life – The Story of Isadora Duncan
by Ean Wood
Headlong Though Life is a racy and compelling biography of Isadora Duncan that gives readers a front-seat ride in the breathless career of this extraordinary woman.
Isadora's life was a bold challenge to convention. She was a campaigner for women's rights, a pioneer in the field of children's education and a believer in sexual freedom, moving from being a romantic Edwardian virgin to an enthusiastic lover. Her whole life was filled with revolutionary fervour. She knew wealth and poverty, joy and freedom.
Headlong Through Life tells a gripping, often startling, story. Ean Wood has filled this biography of Isadora with a wealth of telling detail and revealing anecdotes, drawn from the journals and diaries of her contemporaries and from Isadora's own memoirs.
The result is a vivid and enthralling picture of a woman who, with art as her beacon, plunged heedless and "headlong through life'.
Reviewer's Comments:
The film: 'Isadora Duncan, the Biggest Dancer in the World' was made back in 1966. It gave me a brief and, in my opinion, rather unsatisfatory introduction to Isadora's charismatic and often wilful personna and her horrific death in a Bugatti car.
Unfortunately, much of the film was fiction including her tragic demise which in reality was far more shocking than depicted in the film – and was not in a Bugatti!
I simply hadn't realised how many liberties had been taken by the film makers and how far the story had strayed from the truth until I read Ean Woods superb biography.
Isadora absolutely came alive as the pages were turned. She was a lot of fun but she definitely wasn't perfect!
This thoroughly enjoyable book tells her story with an honesty and integrity that I found refreshing.
