Not Tonight Josephine – Game Review

Next time you sit down with family or friends for an evening of board games you might want to try something rather special that comes all the way from Australia.

"Not Tonight Josephine' is a very cleverly researched and well presented game that offers plenty of fun and a hugely educational experience. Based on world history it has a range of trivia questions that really tax the brain but, with deduction and a little thought are almost all answerable – even if you don't really have a clue.

From the outset "Not Tonight Josephine' is compelling. An attractive playing board, gold coloured "coins' and a set of dinky glass counters give a 'classy' look and feel.

The trivia questions are very nicely printed on high quality cards and stored in well made boxes. This is a top quality game that fits comfortably into any kind of social gathering.

The original game's multiple choice questions are tough but definitely do-able. If you take time to think through the possible solutions a smart player can often work out the correct answer without knowing a thing about the past. I have to say, it is slightly easier if you do know your Byzantines from your Boxers but a degree in history certainly isn't essential.

For those who would rather add a bit of bite to their trivia there is a brand new expansion pack available in the UK this month which extends the gameplay considerably. Almost three thousand more questions and an extension to the rules which definitely sorts the boys from the girls.

Our only concern was with a question about Cockney English where a "kiss me hardy' order for Bacardi was described as an order for gin! We suspect the game's antipodean antecedents were responsible for that one!

Alcoholic out-takes apart, Not Tonight Josephine really is great entertainment and good fun to play. It takes a while to get through a game – think Monopoly rather than snakes and ladders – but is enjoyable and challenging right to the end. We give it a whopping 9 out of 10 for playability!

Available on the internet at £29.99
