The Revenge of Indian Peter

by Rosemary Linnell

The year is 1760 and a bizarre figure is causing a stir in Edinburgh, claiming that he was captured from his hometown of Aberdeen at the age of eleven and sold into slavery in America. He also claims to have been captured by Delaware Indians (hence his appearance and his nickname, Indian Peter).

Now he's back in Scotland and wants his revenge on those men who sold him into slavery and robbed him of his childhood. Despite all the suffering he has endured, Peter's struggle for justice and credibility among the respectable citizens of 18th century Scotland is perhaps the hardest challenge he faces.

The Revenge of Indian Peter is a very unusual true story told in the form of a historical novel. Intensely exciting and brimming with authentic detail, this book brings to life the cruel realities of: the slave trade, the plight of North American Indians and the period following the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland.

Rosemary Linnell carefully studied and sifted the available historical sources, among them the court cases preserved in the Advocates' Library, Edinburgh, and Williamson's own published pamphlets detailing his experiences in order to write this extraordinary book. Rosemary Linnell presents Peter's remarkable story with a clarity and sympathy that readers will find totally engaging.

Reviewer's Comments:

The Revenge of Indian Peter is a remarkable piece of research work written and delivered in a way that is easy to understand and enjoy.

The plot unfolds slowly but grips the reader from the outset. Imagine a small boy snatched from his neighbourhood, imprisoned in a barn and shipped away to the new World as a slave. As a work of pure fiction it would hardly be credible – as a well researched and well written "true story' it is outstanding.

Rosemary Linnell's narrative style is faultless and her acute attention to detail means the reader can concentrate on the story without irritating distractions. Peter's return to take his revenge on those who "spirited' him away is told with panache.

If you enjoy a well written historical novel then this will be right up your street – order a copy today!
