Rivers of Time is a true and very surprising detective story that started with a name on a 17th century gravestone.

That name was Philippa Prentis Phillips and her gravestone was set in a beautiful, isolated spot on the idyllic Caribbean island of Nevis. When, in 1985, Roland Archibald, a gentle, Nevisian who owned the land, showed the stone to June Goodfield, he simply said: "She loved it up here. I come up every day to talk to her and when I die I am going to be buried here too."

June Goodfield was immediately hooked and a compelling desire to resurrect the long-dead Philippa became an obsession. Why did this black man cherish the grave of a white woman who lived centuries before, whose descendants might well have owned his ancestors as slaves?

Who was Philippa? And why has she acquired such iconic status that people still trek up to Saddle Hill on Nevis to talk to her?

Using authentic historical records and living testimony as her guides, the author uncovered the story of a romantic but dramatic life, where courage and energy overcame appalling odds.

This is a truly inspiring tale of a very poor English woman who helped to lay the foundations of present day Caribbean society.

This lovely book is beautifully presented, meticulously researched and a superb example for all social historians to follow. More importantly, it is beautifully written and having taken it to bed to read I was hooked from the first chapter and finished it at 4am.

The Author

Dr June Goodfield lives in Sussex and is Chairman of the local Historical Society. During a busy professional life she has travelled extensively to the Caribbean and throughout the world, writing books and making television films. She is the author of twelve books on contemporary scientific issues and two novels.
