Style Guide - Places
Changes
Place names and geographical borders change with time. Specify where you
are writing about. If possible, give the modern name and set the
historical context, e.g., the county of Avon no longer exists - references
to locations in the former county should
make this clear, saying whether a town is now found in Gloucestershire or
Somerset. See also Russia.
Roman
names
Write the Roman name first with the modern name following in brackets,
e.g. Londinium (London), or refer to Roman London.
Foreign names
Use the English spelling, e.g. Copenhagen not Kovenhagen.
Buildings
Write in full on the first instance and use shortened versions after,
e.g. the Science Museum, then, the museum.
Be careful to avoid ambiguity when referring to more than one building of
similar purpose in the same item.
