History.uk.com as a resource for teachers and children

It is not often that a free, safe and enjoyable learning resource comes the way of hard-pressed teachers.

History.uk.com has been designed to be suitable for classroom use. It offers a wealth of material to enhance teaching plans and increase ICT interaction across the curriculum.

Designed as a web resource, History.uk.com offers a massive dynamic database of historical data which is fast loading, accurate and non-political in its presentation. It has simple, straightforward presentation without the presence of distracters such as promotional banners and spurious advertising.

Searching can be achieved by a number of different methods, such as keyword, place name, post code or even telephone dialling code. This flexibility helps students to explore historic events in their immediate neighbourhood where the subject may be more meaningful and interesting.

The site has relevance for a broad spectrum of users but in particular Key Stages 1 to 4, where ICT in applications across the curriculum is encouraged. The site gently teases the surfer into exploring the area of interest and inevitably broadens their exposure to various aspects on their original search.

As History.uk.com was developed, it was decided to include an interactive Timeline to provide a visual ‘time lapse’ perspective to help children appreciate events and their relationships in a linear fashion. The user can scroll through the years dipping in and out as they choose.

The Timeline content was created in ‘newspaper’ style with headlines showing the most important events and essential historical detail underneath. This format has proven to be easy to read and does not confuse the less sophisticated reader with unnecessary detail.

Teachers can be confident that History.uk.com meets the most stringent tests of propriety and has passed the closest examination for factual accuracy. The site is closely scrutinised to ensure consistently high standards and acceptable content.

We are currently working with many of the UK’s major historical attractions to create ‘educational visit plan’ for teachers. This will be available as a download in the near future to help when organising school visits to the UK’s plethora of historical places of interest.

It is intended that the site should evolve over time. Input from both teachers and students will be essential if this resource is to provide a working part of the curriculum.

Our aim is help students to link events and places together and see how the past always helps to shape the future. To do this, we invite your contributions.
