These remarkable novels demonstrate the tragedy, violence and treachery that befell innocent citizens as the two sides fought early Civil War battles in Lichfield, Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon.

Avid readers of historical fiction should rush to their nearest bookshop and grab a copy of 'First Dry Rattle' and 'A Daring Resolution' without delay.

Ms Boyd's cast of characters rank alongside those of Sharpe and Cadfael. Beautifully researched, extremely well written and with a plot that thickens by the minute, I couldn't rate them higher.

Both novels are beautifully presented. The paper is a delight to handle and the glorious cover illustrations were obviously chosen with great care. All in all, a superb reading experience.

The Author

Celia Boyd has written Young Ravens, a novel for children set in the Midlands during the Second World War – shortly to be published by Graficas Books, and First Fashionings, Social Conditioning in Georgian Children's Fiction. She has contributed to The Cambridge Guide to Children's Books in English, and has had two articles published in Signal, Approaches to Children's books.
